River to the sea
Your correspondent denies that the chant, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, is antisemitic or genocidal (Letters, 20/3) but it very clearly is both.
The area from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea includes all of Israel.
The chant clearly means Israel will cease to exist.
Denying the right of the Jewish people to their state which has existed for 75 years, in their homeland, the land in which they are indigenous and have lived for thousands of years, is plain antisemitism, and expressing the wish to destroy Israel is plainly genocidal.
The claim that the rallies using this chant don’t intend antisemitism merely means they’re trying to convince us, and maybe themselves, that denying Jews a right they demand for others is somehow not antisemitic.
