CANCELLED: Justice for Palestinians and Australian Foreign Policy

Tuesday 3 September ~ 6:30pm ~ Coburg Town Hall

It is with regret that Free Palestine Melbourne is announcing the cancellation of next week’s forum on the subject of Justice for Palestine and Australian Foreign Policy, which was to be held at Coburg Town Hall, featuring Peter Khalil MP, the member for Wills and Special Envoy for Social Cohesion, and Samantha Ratnam, the Greens candidate for Wills.

The forum was intended as an opportunity for Wills voters to question the lead candidates in their electorate on their parties’ positions regarding such issues as the recognition of Palestinian statehood, Australia’s ties to Israeli military corporations and the treatment of Palestinian refugees fleeing the Gaza Strip. While Ms Ratnam accepted our invitation immediately, Mr Khalil waited until 13 days before the forum to reply with a two sentence rejection.

Over the past week, Free Palestine Melbourne has failed to find a member of the ALP who is prepared to argue the government’s case in a public forum. Feeling that this would leave the forum unbalanced, we have therefore decided to cancel.

Although Free Palestine Melbourne is a non-partisan organisation, we cannot help but contrast Ms Ratnam’s willingness to engage with the issue the issue of Palestine and Australian Foreign Policy with Mr Khalil’ high handed and dismissive rejection of our invitation. Nor can we overlook the fact that, while he did not have time to explain his positions to the Wills community, he nevertheless found time to conduct a lengthy lunchtime interview for the Financial Review, in which he claimed (without presenting a shred of evidence) that photos out of Gaza are manipulated and made an incoherent claim that those protesting against the Israeli atrocities have a “very simplistic, almost neo-Marxist element of neo-white settlers” understanding of the conflict. *

Accordingly, although Free Palestine Melbourne has never endorsed a political candidate and is not yet ready to endorse Ms Ratnam, we have decided to accept her invitation to attend her campaign launch, which she graciously extended to our members when we informed her of the forum’s cancellation.

* No one in Free Palestine Melbourne has been able to discover what a neo-white settler is.

Webinar with Dr Shir Hever: Israel: From “a startup nation” to “a shutdown nation”

Thursday 12 September 2024, 7pm

“From a start-up nation to a shut down nation” was a slogan commonly chanted by protestors at demonstrations within the Zionist state against their government preceding the Israeli genocide in Gaza – as early as February 2023 to be precise.

This webinar will delve into the details of how the genocidal war on Gaza, alongside the international community’s mobilisation with the Palestinian struggle including the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, are impacting the Zionist state.

The webinar features a conversation with Dr. Shir Hever who is deeply involved in researching methods and ways to pressure the state of Israel into complying to its obligations under International Law by BDS mechanisms.
