Herald Sun Coverage of Marwan Barghouti: A Failure of Responsible Journalism
Free Palestine Melbourne condemns the Herald Sun’s front-page headline characterising Marwan Barghouti solely as a “convicted Palestinian terrorist.” This framing, employed by journalists Alex White and Carly Douglas, reflects a troubling pattern of one-sided reporting on Palestinian affairs that has become increasingly prevalent in the Australian media landscape, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The Herald Sun’s coverage omitted critical context. Barghouti was abducted and has been held in Israeli detention since his arrest in Ramallah in April 2002, a transfer that Barghouti’s legal representatives and the Inter-Parliamentary Union have argued was conducted in breach of the Oslo Agreements and the Fourth Geneva Convention. He was convicted in 2004 by an Israeli court whose jurisdiction he formally rejected on the grounds that, as an elected Palestinian Legislative Council member, Barghouti could not lawfully be tried by an occupying power. His trial has been widely criticised by international legal observers as falling short of basic standards of due process. The Herald Sun also failed to seek comment from Free Palestine Melbourne, which has an ongoing campaign calling for his immediate release.
Adnan Mansour of Free Palestine Melbourne said: “Rather than fostering the tolerance and social cohesion that responsible journalism should promote, the Herald Sun’s front-page headline uncritically advances a one-sided narrative on an extraordinarily complex geopolitical issue. In doing so, it risks perpetuating cycles of misunderstanding, division and hatred — the very outcomes a free press should work to prevent. Instead of informing readers, the coverage appears designed to reinforce a narrow political perspective at the expense of fairness and context. Barghouti is a political prisoner and a unifying figure whose release could open a genuine path to lasting peace.”
The article’s reliance on statements from Zionism Victoria president Elyse Schachna and Zionist Federation of Australia president Jeremy Leibler, without providing equivalent context, further undermines its balance. While both cited Barghouti’s convictions, neither the journalists nor the quoted parties acknowledged the contested legal basis of those convictions, nor that Barghouti was brought from the West Bank to stand trial in Israel in circumstances that critics argue breached international law.
Barghouti remains the most popular Palestinian political figure across factional lines. He recently received the highest number of votes 1,879 out of 2,514, in Fatah’s Central Committee elections, held in May 2026, despite being imprisoned and held in prolonged solitary confinement. Opinion polls consistently show he would win the Palestinian presidency by a significant margin if permitted to stand.
Concerns about Barghouti’s treatment in custody have grown significantly in recent months. His lawyer, Ben Marmarelli, has reported multiple serious assaults, including a beating in which Barghouti lost consciousness and sustained rib fractures, with adequate medical treatment allegedly denied. In August 2025, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir confronted Barghouti in his cell — footage that was widely condemned, including by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Reports indicate Ben-Gvir showed Barghouti an image of an electric chair during the visit. Israel has also denied requests from the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit him.
Free Palestine Melbourne calls on the Herald Sun to provide a full correction and to report on this matter with the accuracy, balance and contextual rigour its readers deserve. We further call on the Australian Government and the international community to demand Barghouti’s immediate and unconditional release.
