Kidnapped by the IDF from Ramallah in 2002, prominent Palestinian politician Marwan Barghouti was taken to Israel in breach of the Geneva convention. Following a trial that breached international law and fell significantly short of basic standards of due process, Barghouti remains imprisoned.
For almost 24 years, Israel has repeatedly ignored demands to release him.
A leading advocate for Palestinian self-determination, Barghouti has always maintained his innocence. Nelson Mandela likened Barghouti’s imprisonment to that of his own on Robben Island.
In September 2025, Barghouti was beaten unconscious by eight Israeli guards, and Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir publicly threatened him with execution.
Mai Saif, of Free Palestine Melbourne, said:
‘It’s unconscionable that after recognising Palestine, our government rolled out the red carpet for Israeli President and war criminal Isaac Herzog, while Palestinian political leaders, including Marwan Barghouti, are incarcerated and tortured in Israeli prisons.’
The imminent threat to Barghouti’s life has seen an urgent, renewed demand for his release, backed by hundreds of high profile individuals around the world, including Mandla Mandela and Sir Richard Branson. His continued detention is considered a major obstacle to a credible peace process.
Arab Barghouti, son of Marwan Barghouti, said:
‘Our mission is Palestinian freedom. My father is the most popular Palestinian figure and a pathway to peace. His presence in Palestinian politics is now urgent.’
Australia has recognised the State of Palestine, reaffirming its commitment to a peaceful, negotiated resolution to the conflict. Barghouti’s case is no longer a distant issue. Australia must demand Israel immediately and unconditionally release Marwan Barghouti.
