UN agency in Gaza politicised beyond its primary purpose

Reading Henry Ergas is ever enlightening (“Cut funding for good to end radical UN agency’, 9/2).

Ergas provides a comprehensive history of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency that articulates its long-forgotten purposes and principles that have succumbed to complete politicisation so that this body, formed under the aegis of the UN, no longer freely serves the alleviation of human disaster, as intended, but has been corrupted into a body that, without proper accountability, sustains the unsettled state of affairs in the Middle East. An illustration of this is provided by Ergas pointing to the unaccounted use of a significant proportion of its revenues by terrorist organisations, such as Hamas.

The corruption of UNRWA ideals is reason enough for the cessation of its activities altogether and without delay. Some more credible alternative must be set up in its stead.

Henry Ergas’s critique of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency traverses its history and operations and advocates its replacement by other, yet-to-be-determined options.

What he doesn’t address is the indispensable role the UNRWA is playing in the current catastrophe in Gaza.

With some 30,000 people killed, most of them women and children, an unknown number buried under rubble, nearly two million people displaced and in peril of starvation, and countless buildings destroyed, now is not the time for funding for the UNRWA to be paused, let alone cut for good. The Australian government should restore UNRWA funding immediately.
