Britain Joins the Ranks of Finger-Waggers
When Britain’s Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, warns of a supposed “clear risk” that UKsupplied arms to Israel might be used to commit a “serious violation of international humanitarian law”, he joins the other finger-waggers, Kamala Harris and Penny Wong (“UK govt announces partial suspension of arms exports to Israel”, 3/8). Both use similar language regarding Israel’s right to defend itself but “how it does so matters”. Months ago, Henry Ergas nailed Wong when he said this was a platitude smuggled into a double standard: one for Israel, another for Hamas.
Indeed, as your editorial on Hamas’s despicable murder in cold blood of six more innocent hostages concludes: “The execution of the six after almost 11 months in captivity demands solid support for Israel in its war to destroy Hamas, not constant carping about the Jewish state’s battle for survival against terrorists who are showing themselves to be every bit as evil as Islamic State at the height of its rampage.”
(“Hamas again shows true colours”, 3/9). What part of that do our AUKUS leaders not get?
